Flocculant is used to describe the action of polymeric materials which form bridges between individual particles. Bridging occurs when segments of a polymer chain adsorb on different particles and help particles aggregate. Flocculant carrys active groups with a charge which will counterbalance the charge of the particles. Flocculants adsorb on particles and cause destabilization either by bridging or charge neutralizatio. It includes cationic flocculant, anionic flocculant, nonionic flocculant and amphoteric flocculant.
Cationic flocculants are co-polymers of acrylamide with increasing proportions of cationic monomers
Anionic flocculants are co-polymers of acrylamide with increasing proportions of acrylate groups.Among organic polymer flocculants
Non-ionic organic polymers are water soluble polymers or polyelectrolytes that do not carryan electric charge and have a high molecular weight and low ionic degree
The molecular chain of Amphoteric flocculant has two kinds of anionic and cationic groups, but amphoteric flocculant is by no mean a mixture of anionic andcationic flocculant
