Application of ZETAG 4139 Anionic Flocculant
ZETAG 4139 is a high-performance anionic polyacrylamide flocculant developed for efficient solid–liquid separation in mining, mineral processing, alumina refining, and industrial water treatment applications. It is supplied as a dry, free-flowing granular powder and is characterized by very high molecular weight with low to medium anionic charge density, enabling effective flocculation of fine and ultra-fine suspended solids under a wide range of operating conditions.
Mineral Processing and Ore Beneficiation
One of the primary applications of ZETAG 4139 is in mineral processing and ore beneficiation circuits. In copper, gold, iron ore, nickel, phosphate, and coal operations, large volumes of slurry must be clarified to maintain stable plant performance and recover valuable process water. ZETAG 4139 acts through polymer bridging, adsorbing onto mineral particle surfaces and linking them into large, shear-resistant flocs.
When applied in high-rate thickeners and clarifiers, ZETAG 4139 significantly improves settling velocity, increases underflow solids concentration, and enhances overflow clarity. Clear overflow water can be recycled back into grinding, flotation, or leaching circuits, reducing freshwater demand and improving overall water balance within the plant.
Tailings Thickening and Tailings Water Recovery
ZETAG 4139 is widely used in tailings thickening and tailings management systems, where efficient dewatering and water recovery are critical. Tailings slurries typically contain a high proportion of fine particles that settle slowly without chemical assistance. ZETAG 4139 promotes rapid aggregation of these particles, forming dense flocs that settle quickly and compact efficiently.
In high-density and deep-cone thickeners, ZETAG 4139 enables higher underflow densities, reduced tailings volume, and improved tailings dam stability. Enhanced water recovery from tailings supports sustainable mining practices and is particularly valuable in water-scarce regions. The strong floc structure formed by ZETAG 4139 also helps maintain underflow consistency in paste and thickened tailings applications.
Alumina Refining and Bayer Process
Another key application area for ZETAG 4139 is the alumina refining industry, especially within the Bayer process. During alumina production, red mud separation and washing are technically demanding due to the fine particle size, high alkalinity, and high solids content of the slurry. ZETAG 4139 is used to improve red mud settling, thickening, and washing performance.
In primary settlers and washer circuits, ZETAG 4139 accelerates red mud settling and increases washer throughput. The improved overflow clarity achieved with ZETAG 4139 is essential for efficient caustic soda recovery and reduced soda losses. By minimizing suspended solids carryover, it also reduces scaling and fouling in downstream evaporation, precipitation, and heat exchange equipment, contributing to improved plant reliability and lower maintenance costs.
Industrial Wastewater Treatment
ZETAG 4139 is highly effective in industrial wastewater treatment applications involving inorganic suspended solids. It is commonly used in steel plants, power stations, cement factories, chemical processing facilities, and construction materials industries. Typical contaminants treated with ZETAG 4139 include metal hydroxides, silica, clay, fly ash, and mineral fines.
In many treatment systems, ZETAG 4139 is applied in combination with inorganic coagulants such as polyaluminum chloride (PAC), aluminum sulfate, or ferric salts. The coagulant neutralizes particle surface charge, while ZETAG 4139 enhances floc growth, strength, and settling speed. This combined approach improves clarification efficiency, reduces turbidity, and helps facilities meet discharge or water reuse standards.
Sludge Thickening and Mechanical Dewatering
ZETAG 4139 is also widely applied in sludge thickening and mechanical dewatering processes. In gravity thickeners, belt filter presses, centrifuges, and vacuum filters, the polymer improves water release by forming large, porous, and permeable flocs. These flocs allow water to drain efficiently under gravity or mechanical pressure.
As a result, sludge treated with ZETAG 4139 achieves higher cake solids content, reduced sludge volume, and lower polymer consumption per ton of dry solids. Improved dewatering performance leads to reduced energy usage, lower transportation costs, and decreased disposal expenses, making ZETAG 4139 an economically attractive solution for industrial sludge management.
Process Water Clarification and Recycling
In process water clarification and recycling systems, ZETAG 4139 produces low-turbidity overflow water suitable for reuse within industrial operations. Clean recycled water reduces abrasion and wear on pumps and pipelines, minimizes fouling in heat exchangers, and stabilizes reagent performance in mineral processing circuits. Consistent water quality is especially important in flotation and leaching processes, where variations can negatively impact metallurgical performance.
Operational Characteristics
ZETAG 4139 is valued for its wide pH operating range, tolerance to high salinity, and reliable performance under fluctuating solids loading and variable water chemistry. It is typically prepared as a dilute aqueous solution using standard polymer make-down systems. Proper dilution, hydration time, and gentle mixing are essential to ensure full polymer activation and optimal flocculation efficiency.
